    • Chelsea bietet offenbar £45 Mio für David Villa, dessen fixe Ablösesumme bei £70 Mio liegt.

Blues hope to cut £70m Villa fee

CHELSEA will attempt to slash David Villa’s £70million price-tag with a new £45m bid.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho refuses to give up on the Valencia striker, 25.

Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich has approved the latest offer after having a £25m bid rejected in January.

The club’s top Spanish scout Juan Sol, who is working on the deal, told a close pal: “Chelsea are ready to up their offer to £45m. They’re determined to sign Villa.”

If the new move is successful it will smash Chelsea’s record-transfer fee of £30m which they paid AC Milan to bag Andriy Shevchenko last summer.

Villa has urged Valencia chiefs to stop pricing him out of a switch by demanding an astronomical buy-out fee in his contract.

He said: “I’ve got seven years on my Valencia contract and a transfer clause of £70m.

"Maybe those who should listen to offers are the directors and not me.

“Right now, the options of me leaving are very difficult.”

    • Chelsea spy Russian starlet

Chelsea are weighing up a move for Spartak Moscow striker Alexander Prudnikov.

Sporting director Frank Arnesen, who is responsible for recruiting youth talent at the club, flew out to Russia on a scouting trip and identified a number of potential targets.

However, he was particularly pleased with 18-year-old Prudnikov's contribution.

"He was the best player on the pitch," he told The Sun.

"He impressed me a lot. There are quite a few players who could easily play in England."

Chelsea are currently looking to bolster their attacking options, with Mourinho admitting they "need a striker" with Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou both set to miss a month of action next season at the African Cup of Nations.

    • Chelsea will Berbatov

      BLUES BERBATOV SWOOP

CHELSEA believe they will win the race to sign Dimitar Berbatov in a £25million summer deal.

As Sunday Mirror Sport revealed last weekend, the reigning champions and archrivals Manchester United are both in hot pursuit of Tottenham's star striker.

Spurs do not want to lose the 26-year-old they recruited last summer in a £10.9m deal from Bayer Leverkusen.

A White Hart Lane insider said: "We don't have to sell. Dimi signed a four-year deal when he joined us and he's happy here."

But the big two still reckon at the right price the Bulgarian can be lured away.

Chelsea sense they can win the battle and that will be a major coup for sporting director Frank Arnesen, who has been leading the campaign to make Berbatov's recruitment a top priority.

Arnesen quit White Hart Lane in controversial circumstances in 2005, with Chelsea forced to pay about £5m in compensation for his services.

Inside Old Trafford there is a belief that Louis Saha may not have a long-term future with the club and boss Sir Alex Ferguson may be prepared to trade the France striker in a bid to provide Spurs with an immediate replacement for Berbatov.

Spurs boss Martin Jol has enquired about Saha in the past and the striker's recent injury problems have undermined his United career.

    • Essien bei Barca im Gespräch

      Essien to move to Barcelona?

Barcelona are preparing a swoop for Chelsea's Michael Essien and three of his teammates, according to Catalan press.

The others are Frank Lampard, John Terry and Arjen Robben.

DiarioSport claims that the spine of Jose Mourinho's Blues are frustrated by their continued failure in Europe and want a new challenge.

Essien, is probably the least likely player among the targets to leave the 'Bridge'. Alongside Didier Drogba, the Ghana star has been Chelsea's brightest light this season, impressing in defence as well as in his favoured central midfield position. He has only been at Chelsea for two seasons and his stock will have risen since his £24.4 million move from Lyon in the summer of 2005.

A move for Lampard has long been tipped, with the England midfielder learning Spanish on account of his partner Elen Rives - who is from Barcelona - and available for a cut-price fee at the end of the season once his contract ceases to be protected.

England captain Terry would be the ideal signing for Frank Rijkaard as he looks to shore-up a leaky defence, something ageing summer signing Lilian Thuram has been unable to do. The no-nonsense centre back is embroiled in contract negotiations with Chelsea which appear to have stalled after the club refused to countenance his demands for a lifelong deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the world.

Robben has failed to live up to his early form at Stamford Bridge after a series of injuries and indifferent form and has been linked with a number of clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and even Spurs. But it is hard to see him as anything more than a squad player at Barca, who already boast a wealth of attacking riches, although the less physical nature of La Liga could see him recover the spark that made him one of the Premiership's most feared attacking players two seasons ago.

Barcelona have also been linked with Zaragoza defender Gabriel Milito, Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, Arsenal defender Kolo Toure and Manchester United striker Guiseppe Rossi, currently on-loan at Parma.
